Paws With A Cause and Deafinitely Dogs! are two organizations with a similar mission, to increase the quality of life for people with disabilities. PAWS has recently partnered with Deafinitely Dogs!, to continue furthering both organizations’ missions.
Many people ask, “What happens to PAWS Dogs when they are not placed as an Assistance Dog?” The priority is to find the dog’s highest purposeful placement. If that placement is not as a PAWS Assistance Dog, we look to other working careers such as arson detection, police work, or, most recently, PTSD Dogs.
When we realized that REG and ARCHER were not going to become PAWS Assistance Dogs, our team started looking for other careers for them. That is when we found Deafinitely Dogs!, who was able to successfully train and place REG and ARCHER as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Dogs!
Now, that’s something to bark about!
REG and ARCHER were both placed as Service Dogs with military combat veterans to provide support on their darkest days. The dogs are trained to interrupt anxiety by nudging, licking, or pawing their person when they notice agitation or anxiety, stop nightmares or flashbacks by turning on the lights and waking their partners, and offer companionship to reduce isolation by giving unconditional, non-judgmental love.
The beauty of these placements is that although REG and ARCHER weren’t able to be Assistance Dogs for the four types of clients PAWS serves, they still became Assistance Dogs for people with disabilities through another organization. They are still fulfilling our mission and we couldn’t be happier.
We are so proud that REG and ARCHER found the perfect careers and partners. Also, we are thankful to Deafinitely Dogs! for getting them to their highest purposeful placement.
Together, we can increase the quality of life and independence for people with disabilities.
