Exercising, just like for hoomans, keeps our dogs happy and healthy! Especially after we have been cooped up inside, it is even more important to get your pups moving. Check out these three easy ways to get active with your dog.
1. Take a walk
Going for a walk with your dog is a great way for you both to get active and get some energy out. Remember that if the blacktop or sidewalk is too hot for you to put the palm of your hand on for 10 seconds, then it is too hot for our furry friend’s paws as well.
2. Swimming
Lots of dogs love to swim or play in the water, but make sure they have had a slow and safe introduction to the water first! Try playing a game of fetch with your dog in your pool or favorite dog-friendly lake. If swimming in a lake, consider having your dog on a long line, so they don’t get too far from shore or people. You may even want to get a doggy life vest! Dogs that swim are more prone to ear infections and hot spots, so pups should be rinsed and dried off entirely after swimming to try and prevent this from happening. Be careful to make sure your dog is taking breaks; when swimming, they are using muscles they don’t use often and can easily overexert themselves.
3. Backyard agility course
This fun and easy idea is sure to get your pup moving. Set up a DIY agility course in your backyard. Use items that your dog can run under, weave through, and jump over. Make sure you have plenty of water available for your pup to stay hydrated!
